Just before lockdown, my grandson came over and we spent some time planting seeds. He wanted to plant the seed from an apple he had just eaten. I was a bit sceptical, as I know that growing apples from seed is not reliable. However, typical granny, I thought we could do it and he would learn that not everything grows. All the other seeds germinated, but not the apple, until three weeks later, there was a tiny shoot.
Because of lockdown, he could not watch it grow, and has still only seen pictures of his apple tree. It's thriving now and we will have to make a decision of where to plant it. It is not likely to ever be a reliable fruiter, but somehow this little seed which was given no chance has for me, come to symbolise hope through the horrors of Covid.
